Tainted Drywall Factual Health Report
Between the years 2001 and 2008, a large number of residential properties were constructed by both local and major commercial builders using imported Chinese drywall. In recent months, numerous complaints by homeowners have lead to ongoing investigations confirming tainted drywall as the source of significant human health risks, as well as property damage. During the course of our investigation, tainted drywall has been found in homes across several states. Because the way drywall is tracked between distribution houses, developers, and construction sites, there is no way to determine exactly how much of the tainted drywall was installed in any particular home without on-site destructive examination (DE). On-site non-destructive examination (NDE), testing, and analysis can, however, yield a fairly accurate estimate, confirming residences that are affected.
A recent study released by the Florida Department of Health has found tainted drywall to out-gas, or slowly release, hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide, and carbon disulfide at levels between 100 PARTS PER BILLION (PPB) and 1 PART PER MILLION (PPM). In these levels, sulfur compounds cause a pervasive, unpleasant odor in the home, greatly accelerate the corrosion of copper, steel, and silver, and pose health risks to residents over a prolonged exposure period.
The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has rated hydrogen sulfide and carbon disulfide at a 20 PPM PERMISSIBLE EXPOSURE LIMIT (PEL) for GENERAL INDUSTRY. OSHA alternately mandates a 10 PPM PEL for hydrogen sulfide in the CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY. It should be noted, however, THAT NO PEL EXISTS for these compounds under RESIDENTIAL CIRCUMSTANCES. The listed PEL values were determined for an 8 hour Time Weighted Average (TWA) work shift under NON-PERMANENT INDUSTRIAL or COMMERCIAL CONDITIONS. Under residential conditions, exposure times are potentially TRIPLED, and CONTINUOUS. Furthermore, these PEL values do not take into account existing health conditions that may render an occupant predisposed to sulfur compound induced symptoms, such as apnea, coma, convulsions, irritated eyes, conjunctivitis pain, lacrimation, photo-phobia, corneal vacillation, respiratory system irritation, dizziness, headaches, fatigue, insomnia, GI disturbances, decreased sperm count, menstrual disturbances, coronary heart disease, kidney and liver damage, dermatitis, and polyneuropathy.
